Help! Anyone Experienced in the Art of Tofu?
Ok, I think I have worked up the courage to finally try tofu. I have heard you can do some amazing things with it. And if I could get used to it, it would be a great supplement in my diet. However, I don't know where to start. I mean up until I was in my early twenties I thought tofu was actually what the green sprouts were on the salad bar at a restaurant. See? Totally oblivious. I don't want to start out not doing it right, not have a good experience with it, and give up. I read that I should start out with extra firm tofu, but beyond that I am clueless. I would love your suggestions on how to start out with tofu. Recipe suggestions would be awesome! If I find that I like it, I might get my family started on it too. Maybe sneak it in their meals at first. I really want to be able to say I heart tofu, but we will see. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

My favorite way to eat tofu is in a veggie stir fry. I cut it into cubes and marinade it in a mix of soy sauce, garlic, a little sesame oil and cayenne (and sometimes orange juice or ginger). I throw it into the mix of veggies, marinade and all and use the marinade as part of the sauce. Served over rice or soba noodles it's fabulous- even my children will eat it!
ReplyDeleteAlso, check out "The Enchanted Broccoli Forest" cookbook at your library- they have some good ideas.
Good luck.

Thanks! Will do!
ReplyDeleteI just tried tofu a few months ago for the first time and so I understand your anxiety about it. I didn't want to mess up my first experience either. I ended up cooking the tofu in a frying pan for a little bit until a bit golden and then adding the tofu to a jar of vegetable stir fry sauce (your choice, I used a curry based one) and added some corn red peppers, broccoli to it. It was quite tasty! Really tofu has no taste so you have to put a sauce with it and that's what it will taste like. As for texture...I've only tried the extra firm. Also...don't be afraid to try different brands of extra firm to get one that you like the best. Just because they all say extra firm, does not mean they all have the same texture, if you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteoh...I also served this over rice!
ReplyDeleteSonya that sounds delicious! Thanks for the tips!
